Blog nine - Conclusive Thoughts

Image
Over the past few months of creating this solo I have learnt new skills which I can use going forwards. Overall, I found the process to be quite stressful in terms of meeting deadlines and having to have created enough ideas to bring to the next lesson , to piece together with other peoples’ ideas . However, I did find it interesting seeing where you can develop your research from small ideas of a chosen stimulus, drawing a bigger image which can be incorporated in your work. I sometimes found that I struggled to come up with choreography which related to my stimulus, and I often fell back to movements which felt familiar . In the future I might challenge myself to try to create movements which wouldn't necessarily be my go-to and are ‘different’ .   I enjoyed the collaboration aspect of this process as it enabled us to come up with a starting point if we were stuck, and it also helped generate new ideas faster as there was more input from people – this something I would like to...

Blog eight - Similarities and Differences

Image
Reflecting on my own creative process over the last few weeks of creating the solo, I am able to draw connections and find the similarities and differences between my own journey , and the journey of practitioners such as Wayne McGregor and Crystal Pite. When choosing my stimulus and deciding on the overall idea for the piece I feel as though it focuses on things which are relevant in as a ‘bigger picture’ and can apply to anyone making it inclusi ve. This is similar to the way Crystal Pite is known for creating work: addressing problems relevant in today’s society . (Company – Kidd Pivot, 2022)   When it came to creating choreography, I feel like I went down a similar route to Crystal Pite in that I already had an idea of what kind of movements I wanted to include. This is different in co ntrast to Wayne McGregor, who uses his dancers as inspiration for his choreography, by choosing pieces from their improvisation . I feel like many of McGregor’s works are more abstract and la...

Blog seven - Where am I in my Process?

Image
My stimulus for my solo has remained the same throughout the creative process; a piece of artwork called ‘Metropolis’ , exploring how we are ‘’dwarfed in today’s society and lost in it’’ . (Schaller, 2019). From this piece of artwork, my focus point of the shadows remained the same and I continued my research based on psychology and how we all have elements of our personality we don’t like and choose to repress into our unconsciousness. (Carl Jung and the Shadow: The Ultimate Guide to the Human Dark Side, 2022) However, from this I found it hard to show this in my choreography besides the use of floorwork , as I feel like showing the two different ‘personalities’ is quite challenging ; therefore, I feel as though my message isn’t all that clear.   The use of floorwork could show the difference between the two b eings: the conscious becoming the unconscious . I feel like I mana ged to capture the image of shadows in my piece well as a lot of movements in my section are slow a...
